I joined the Management Development Programme with HOYER Petrolog UK in 2016 after achieving a 2:1 BA (Hons) degree in Management with Marketing at The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Through my work experience in the motor industry and my degree studies, I decided that a career in management most suited my skills set and I searched for a graduate job that would offer the training and support required, to become an effective manager. My research led me to HOYER as it became clear that this was an organisation that could meet my ambition and personal development needs, whilst providing great opportunities to grow as a manager.
The recruitment process was thorough and I understood very quickly that the role would require commitment, initiative and dedication as a great deal of responsibility would be handed over to me from day one.
The initial 8 weeks training, saw me travelling the length and breadth of the country; this allowed me to gain an insight into how the company manages its operations and to develop a network of support within the business. These relationships have proved to be extremely helpful, when after the eight weeks I was placed in Birmingham to face the many daily challenges of a trainee Logistics Transport Manager and have been able to develop my own personal style of management from the example of others.
My daily role within HOYER allows for a diverse and interesting working week. I am currently based at one of the largest locations in the country, jointly managing 90 drivers on a daily basis on a demanding and highly regarded contract. I am given the flexibility to manage my workload effectively, dividing my time between operational planning and management of the drivers. From being out on the road with a driver to attending contract meetings, no day is ever the same and I have loved the responsibility of having to not only manage others, but also learning to manage my own time.
Through the Graduate development programme HOYER have ensured that my personal development is a high priority and they have exposed me to a variety of roles within HOYER Petrolog UK. I have been a management representative in union meetings, attended national meetings with directors and co-managed a field based location on a different contract.
Despite only being with the organisation a short time, I was given the sole responsibility to devise and develop a programme of recording data for a client organisation. HOYER provided me with the training necessary to develop this project and the support of senior management was invaluable in developing my confidence in my leadership and management skills.
Since I started my career with HOYER, I can’t believe how much I have achieved and developed both personally and professionally. The supportive environment that HOYER embodies allows me to make the most of every opportunity. Having a positive attitude and an open minded approach to this management development programme is imperative and ensures that you will gain the maximum that HOYER has to offer.
