Management Development Programme

I joined HOYER on the Management Development Programme in July 2019, after graduating with distinction from the University of Leeds in MSc Management Consulting. Prior to that, I studied Business & Management at Birmingham City University, with a focus on Operations and Logistics.

Early on in the recruitment process I realised that HOYER was the right company for me to start my professional career. It was clear from my interviews that I would be given responsibility early on and that has definitely turned out to be the case.

I completed my first 8 month placement in the Projects Team; I was given my own projects at an early stage allowing me to demonstrate my existing skills, while also learning new skills through supporting more experienced members of the team. By demonstrating the quality of my work, and asking to increase my workload whenever feasible, I was soon given a greater level of responsibility

in the form of more complex projects with the opportunity to liaise directly with senior managers and directors within Hoyer. One of these projects involved creating a database that is now being used in the Huddersfield Control Centre. Another was to design a method of tracking and reporting on the harsh braking, acceleration and cornering events of our vehicles on the road, which is being rolled out to all of our operational teams in the field. This involved meeting with one of our technology suppliers to set out the requirements and testing the finished product.

I am now undertaking my first field based placement at the Grangemouth terminal, supporting the Location Transport Managers. The role is fast-paced and requires excellent organisation and decision-making skills, although you do have a support network to help you hit the ground running. My role involves ensuring that our day-to-day operations run smoothly. This includes general people management, resource scheduling, liaising with the Planning, Control and Fleet Teams in Huddersfield and a myriad of other responsibilities to ensure that our drivers and vehicles are out making deliveries as planned.

The responsibilities I have been given at Hoyer have already exceeded my expectations. There have been numerous challenges and I have been encouraged to push my limits but I’ve received plenty of help and support along the way and I am always looking forward to the next challenge.
