NOVUS Student
Luke Philips Joined HOYER on 1st September 2020 to complete a 12 month NOVUS placement supporting the operation at one of our busiest terminals in Immingham working alongside the Location Transport Manager (LTM) to ensure the safe and cost effective utilisation of our Driver Technicians and fleet of trucks.
“I decided to study logistics and supply chain after completing some work experience in the industry, I enjoyed the challenge of daily unpredictability and problem solving. After being presented with placement options, my first choice was clear, HOYER! The industry appealed to me due to the importance of safety in the handling of dangerous goods. I also knew from speaking to previous placement students and lecturers that it would be a hands-on and challenging placement which I relished.
I was concerned that COVID would limit my experience on placement but it wasn’t affected at all. It took me 3 months to get a good understanding of the operation, there was a lot to learn, but once I got to grips with it I was given more and more responsibility. I worked on a high profile project to install Onboard Computers throughout our fleet. I learnt how to deal with dealing with day to day operational issues, the investigation of incidents and people management. On a few occasions I was managing the terminal on my own for up to a week at a time.
Since completing my placement year I have continued to work with HOYER part time around by third year studies, and I have been offered and accepted a place on the Graduate Scheme. I would recommend this placement year for anyone who wants to get experience in the industry. HOYER provides an amazing opportunity for you to grow, putting you in challenging situations at times, but support is always there if you need it”
